Android phones outselling Windows Phone 7

November 30th, 2010 by Android Dev

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is finding it tough in the intensely competitive smartphone market, particularly from devices using Android platform. Android phones are outselling Windows Phone 7 by a whopping ratio of 15:1, something which should definitely concern Microsoft. While the popularity of Android phones have increased by leaps and bounds, Windows Phone 7 have [...]

AT&T and T-Mobile Considering the Acer Liquid Metal?

November 30th, 2010 by Android Dev

Brighthand is reporting that a senior Acer official noted that the Acer Liquid Metal might be heading to the United States sometime soon at the company’s Q&A session following their press announcement last week (where we were treated to two new Android tablets and a new Android handset.) Rogers is said to be getting the device in Canada sometime soon, and in the same breath Aymar de Lencquesaing – president of Acer’s smartphone unit – mentioned that AT&T and T-Mobile would be likely candidates for release in the United States due to their GSM networks. The phone is already out in parts of Europe – the most notable being France – but we assume Acer doesn’t want to miss the “affordable smartphone” boat currently setting sail and – as such – won’t let their new high-end offerings completely overshadow the cheaper ones. We’ll be on the lookout for any confirmation regarding United States availability.

New LG Star Pictures Turn Up, Isn’t Stock Android, Runs Froyo, Performs Well in Benchmarks & Has HDMI Port

We only got a couple of non-functional profile shots of the device before, but one of our members over at AndroidForums.com managed to get two of these unreleased beasts and has quietly put out new pictures which confirm new details. Firstly, it has an HDMI-out port, something we didn’t know previously. You can see a door with the text “HDMI” on it covering up what we suppose is the port.

It’s also not running a slightly tweaked stock version of Android as we previously heard, and this particular model is infused with Froyo (but could easily be stepped up to gingerbread before it launches, I suppose.) The Tegra 2 that packs this thing is living up to its hype as it brings about a nice score on quadrant, and berryjuice – our benefactor today and new AndroidForums member (Congrats!) - says it completely outclasses their Galaxy S.

Be sure to stop on over to AndroidForums.com where these images were posted and watch out for new information from one of our very lucky users.

Southwest.com – the airline with the catchy and funny commercials that really do make me want to fly with them – has released their Android app for all to book flights, reserve cars, check up on their rewards programs, and more. It’s a 1.5MB download and sounds like it’ll be well worth the space it takes up if you’re a fan of low rates and free bags. It’s on!

Creative’s 7-inch Ziio Tablet Hits the FCC

Creative tipped us off to their plans of bringing an Android-powered tablet device earlier this month, but that was a 3.2-inch PMP. We think its bigger brother has just hit the FCC. The 7-inch device – named the ZiiO – will have a WVGA display, 8GB and 16GB configurations with the ability to expand capacity by 32GB using a microSD card, a front-facing VGA camera (but no rear-facing camera, oddly enough), WiFi, Bluetooth, and a ZiiLABS HD application processor which we can’t get an idea of how good it may perform. The 8GB version will run you 199.99 pounds while the 16GB will set you back 219.99 pounds. ($315 and $350 here in the states.) [FCC via WirelessGoodness]
