Android Tops Comscore’s US Market Share Chart

The folks at Comscore just put together some numbers regarding US smartphone market share. Their data was gathered from May 2011 though July 2011 – not exactly your traditional quarterly report but could be taken just the same. Of all smartphones here, Android was on 41.8% of them. This is compared to a 36.4% Android enjoyed last month which is still quite impressive.

I should note that these are not sales for the quarter, but overall market share, meaning that out of the 82.2 million smartphone subscribers in America, 34.3 million of them run Android.

Taking a look at other platforms, iPhone is still kicking with 27% of the market share, an increase of 1% since April 2011. Some may attribute Apple’s stagnant growth in the US due to an expected announcement of the iPhone 5, but one can only use that excuse so much.

They said the same thing about the iPhone 4 when it debuted both on Verizon and AT&T (whose respective launches were quite a few months apart) and Apple continued to struggled to grow in market share up against Android.

RIM surprisingly still has 21.7% of the US share, though this is down from 25.7% in April. We’ve also got Microsoft apparently failing to break into the market share here with 5.7%, which is actually down from 6.7%. 4.6 million devices is a lot more than most people think Microsoft is doing.

Finally we have Symbian which never seemed to gain traction here in the US and, not surprisingly, is down from 2.4% in April giving it 1.9% of the share this quarter. Android’s got a big quarter coming up, phone-wise (doesn’t it always?) so it’ll be rather interesting to see how these numbers look once a new breed of phones heads out to store shelves for the holiday season.

Specs for New 4.7-inch HTC Runnymede Revealed – How Big Is Too Big?

If you thought HTC was being a bit “overly ambitious” with the 4.5-inch HTC Holiday (Raider) you ain’t seen nothing yet. Looks like HTC is working on a monster device they’re calling the Runnymede. Apparently, this device showed up like so many devices do, in some EXIF data on a photo site but that didn’t provide any more info than a name. Well, now they boys at Pocketnow have gotten the low down on a more complete list of specs and exactly what to expect from the HTC Runnymede.

  • Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread
  • 4.7-inch, 480×800 display
  • 1.5GHz single-core MSM8255
  • 768MB of RAM / 16GB of storage
  • 8MP/720p rear-camera with dual LED
  • 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera
  • Under 10 millimeters thick
  • Sense 3.5
  • DLNA
  • Bundled Beats headphones (not earphones)

I know most of you see single-core processor and you’re ready to write this device off but there are some other winning specs like that make this device stand out. Like the backlit sensored camera that features a 28mm wide-angle lens and focal ratio of f/2.2. Besides snapping amazing pics, the camera is capable of capturing 60 frames-per-second HD video.

You can expect the HTC Runnymede in time for the holidays but still no word on which carrier will pick this up. What do you guys think? I hear 4.7-inches is the new 4.5.

Samsung Already Sporting Accessories For US Galaxy S II Devices

August 31st, 2011 by Android Dev

Low and behold, what’s a few new Samsung Galaxy S II devices across various carriers without some cool accessories to go with it?  At tonight’s Samsung GSII launch event in New York, several of the display tables showed off a modern and sleek looking multimedia charging dock perfectly complimenting the Galaxy S II.  In nice shiny black, the device also doubles as a speaker (note pic below).  We’ve seen a dock presently accompany the Galaxy S II launched overseas however, this one has been given a bit of a polished look and we’ve got to admit, it looks pretty sweet.  Check out the pics for yourself and don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below.  If you’ll also notice, there is another device to the left of the charging dock.  We’re not quite sure what it is just yet, but stay tuned because we’ll find out.  It appears to be some sort of a charging stand where a second battery can be docked under a cover on the backside of the contraption.

The Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch (boy that’s a mouthful) has finally arrived and is dressed to impress.  Today at Samsung’s GSII launch event in New York Talk Android was able to get a hands-on look at the hardware and software that’s currently driving this device to be one of hottest and sexiest (sorry TechCrunch) devices of the year.  Samsung brought their A-game today when they released the device on three of the four major carriers in the US.  The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived and it’s only a matter of weeks until we can stick this slim thin bad boy in our pockets.  And although the device was already announced before the event here and here, it’s just not the same unless you can hold this power horse in your hand and play with it.  The device is slated for a Sept 16th release date, making Sprint the official first carrier to launch it and will be available for $199 on contract.  Hit the break for the full list of features and to check out some hands-on pics.
